American Airlines flight from D/FW to LAX lands in Phoenix due to unruly passenger

Authorities say a belligerent passenger who caused an airplane to be diverted to a Phoenix airport suffers from mental issues.

Phoenix police spokesman James Holmes says an American Airlines flight from Dallas bound for Los Angeles was forced to land at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport late Saturday when a passenger wouldn’t stop yelling profanities and racial slurs.

Holmes says the 33-year-old man was met by police, who later called a mental health crisis team to the scene.

Holmes says authorities were able to reach the man’s family, who confirmed he has a history of mental issues.

No injuries were reported. Passengers and airline officials declined to press charges.

Holmes says the man was petitioned for a mental evaluation and will be released into his family’s custody.
