Favorite Events In Los Angeles This Week


Here are favorite events happening in Los Angeles this week. We’ll be back on Thursday with our Weekend Planner column to help you plan—what else?— the weekend ahead. And check out the February Guide for other events.

TUESDAY, FEB. 3

FILM: The Los Angeles World Affairs Council (LAWAC) is a nonpartisan nonprofit that organizes speaker events, discussions and film screenings to promote awareness of and engagement with global issues. This month, they’re screening the films nominated for Best Foreign Film Oscar at the Laemmle Royale Theatre. Abderrahmane Sissako’s Timbuktu screens on Tuesday at 7:10 pm. Tickets: $8 for nonmembers.

DISCUSSION: Lisa Bloom and Carl E. Douglas are at the Hammer Museum on Tuesday at 7:30 pm for a discussion on the hot-button issue of race in America. The two American civil rights attorneys come together to discuss recent senseless killings and Bloom’s most recent book, Suspicion Nation: The Inside Story of the Trayvon Martin Injustice and Why We Continue to Repeat It. Free.

STORY: The Moth's Westside edition is at Zanzibar in Santa Monica on Tuesday with storytellers spinning tales on the theme of "cravings." Anyone can toss their hat into the ring for a chance to be selected. All you have to do is prep a 5-minute story on any angle on the topic of needing something....now. Doors and storytelling signups at 7 p.m. and tales begin at 7:30 p.m. Tickets: $8 at the door, $16 in advance (guaranteed admission). Hosted by Lauren Weedman. The venue is 21+.

POP-UP FOOD: Chef Mark Peel (formerly of Campanile) recently announced that he’s opening the new seafood spot Bombo in Grand Central Market. On Tuesday, Peel gives everyone a chance to get a sneak peek by taking over Rascal for a pop-up dinner, cooking alongside Executive Chef Andy Lee. Expect an à la carte menu of potential Bombo entrees complemented by appetizers and sides created by Chef Lee. Reservations required.

POETRY: Red Hen Press presents a poetry reading at Armory Center for the Arts in Pasadena, featuring the women who have pioneered a “new wave of female poets in Los Angeles.” On the program are: Celeste Gainey, Ver?nica Reyes, Terry Wolverton, Kim Dower and Eloise Klein Healy. 7 pm. Free, with a suggested donation of $5.

WEDNESDAY, FEB. 4

BOOKS: On Wednesday at 7 pm, Vromans welcomes author Jan-Christopher Horak who discusses and signs Saul Bass: Anatomy of Film Design. Even if you don’t know the name, you’ve probably seen Bass’s film work or advertising designs. His most famous title sequences include Alfred Hitchcock's Vertigo (1958) and Billy Wilder's The Seven Year Itch (1955).

COMEDY: Ben Hsieh holding a stand-up comedy show at The World Famous Comedy Store on Wednesday to benefit Liberty in North Korea (LiNK), a nonprofit that rescues and resettles North Korean refugees. Performers include the famous Bobby Lee, Tom Papa, Chris D’elia and Paul Kim. Tickets: $20 online/$25 at the door. 8 pm.

COMEDY: The Super Secret Comedy Show returns to the Lyric Theatre on Wednesday at 8 pm with stand-up by Adam Devine, Kyle Kinane, David Koechner, Flula and others. Tickets: $9 - $18.

COMEDY: Calling all parents: Shayna Ferm and MC Doula bring us The Pump and Dump: A Parentally Incorrect Comedy Show and Night Out on Wednesday night at Largo at 8 pm. It’s an evening of irreverent music, audience participation game, prizes, slideshow and a “cathartic review of the audience’s “Most F-ed Up Things” their kids have done recently….” The show is only 90 minutes, so you can be home early to relieve the babysitter. Tickets: $30.

HOLLYWOOD MEMORABILIA: The Hollywood Museum presents the Celebration of Entertainment Awards, a special Award Season Exhibition that runs from Feb. 4 to April 26. View the Dodge Challenger driven by Jake Gyllenhaal in Nightcrawler, the painter’s outfit worn by Amy Adams in Big Eyes, Frances McDormand’s floral dress from Olive Kitteridge, and the red leather jacket worn by Viola Davis in How To Get Away With Murder, among other items. General adult admission: $15.

THURSDAY, FEB. 5

COMEDY: Three Day Rule has teamed up with the American Heart Association of Los Angeles for a RED Party at DSTLD Jeans from 7-10 pm. Wear your favorite red attire, dance and drink while supporting the American Heart Association of L.A. Admission: $30 minimum donation, includes open bar.

TRUNK SHOW: The Craft and Folk Art Museum (CAFAM) holds its Fourth Annual Benefit Trunk Show on Feb. 6-7 with a preview and cocktail reception on Thursday from 5-8 pm. Shop from Darwall & Murphy, Mary Donald, Terri Logan, and Chris Triola, who will be sharing their original pieces, from sculptural jewelry to hand-dyed textiles; 15 percent of all sales benefiting museum exhibitions and programming.

PHOTO: Photographer Timothy White showcases his Pin-Up portraits of celebrities including Cindy Crawford, Tea Leoni, Angie Harmon, Naomi Campbell, Gina Gershon, Bridget Hall, Angie Everheart, Felicity Huffman, Molly Sims, Kate Hudson, Jamie Lynn-Sigler and others at Gallery Go through March 16. The opening reception is on Thursday from 6-9 pm.

OPEN SCREEN: The Echo Park Film Center holds an open screening on Thursday at 8 pm. You’re invited to share your film (up to 10 minutes) with a critical audience—any genre, any style, old works and works-in-progress. First come, first screened and only one film per filmmaker. Formats accepted: DVD, VHS, mini-DV, DV-CAM, Super 8, 8mm, 16mm, Blu Ray, QT File. Special guest is Halifax, Nova Scotia-based animator Heather Harkins who screens two new works about “people contemplating a great love in their lives.” Free pizza by Two Boots Echo Park. Suggested donation: $5 (but filmmakers get in free).

STORYTELLING: Eat Your Words—a live storytelling event hosted by Greg Walloch, is at The Standard, Hollywood’s Cactus Lounge from 8-10 pm. The evening features stories that are inspired by a food theme, told by storytellers, comedians and special guests. This month's storytellers include: Steven Brydle, Lex Vaughn, Greg Cope White, Chris Gorham and Anel Lopez Gorham, and Alec Mapa. Free, but RSVP is strongly encouraged.
