GMC Terrain has new look for 2016 model year

General Motors Co. Tuesday revealed a refreshed 2016 GMC Terrain crossover and upscale Terrain Denali model, vehicles that feature new front and rear looks, hood design and revised center stack and go on sale this fall.

The 2016 Terrain and Terrain Denali were introduced ahead of press days at the New York International Auto Show. The upgraded Terrain features a new chrome grille design for certain trims, LED daytime running lamps on higher trim models, new 18-inch aluminum wheel design and new available exterior colors.

GMC said for the first time, it also will offer side blind-zone and rear cross-traffic alerts on SLE and SLT trims. The trim lineup for '16 changes will include SL, SLE (SLE-1 and SLE-2), SLT and Denali.

"The changes for 2016 provide consumers with even more reasons to consider Terrain as it continues to be a smart choice for customers seeking versatility, style and technology," Duncan Aldred, vice president of GMC sales and marketing, said in a statement.

GM said the New York region is tops for compact SUV sales nationally, with more than 200,000 sold last year. The New York area is Terrain's second highest market, behind Detroit.

The Terrain is an important product for GMC; it helps drive new customers for the brand and is the most popular model among female buyers, at 44 percent.

Terrain holds 5 percent of the U.S.'s compact SUV market, which is the industry's most popular segment and continues to grow. Terrain sales of 105,016 last year were up 5.5 percent from 2013 and set a high since the vehicle's launch in 2009 as a 2010 model. Sales of the Terrain in January and February this year set monthly records.

"The updates for the 2016 Terrain make one of the strongest designs in the compact SUV market even more compelling," Helen Emsley, executive director of global GMC design, said in a statement.

The 2016 Terrain Denali, a popular up-level trim, has a new 19-inch aluminum wheel design and a new light titanium/jet black interior color combo.

Pricing on the Terrain and Terrain Denali has not been announced. GM also is updating the Chevrolet Equinox crossover for the 2016 model year.
