Samsung Source Hints At Galaxy S8 Display Having A 90% Screen-To-Body Ratio

The Galaxy S8 is expected to be a big comeback for Samsung following the Galaxy Note 7 debacle. Some of the rumored Galaxy S8 features include an edge-to-edge display, a 4K screen resolution, a dual-lens camera, Exynos 8895 or Qualcomm Snapdragon 830 chipsets, a USB-C port, 6GB of RAM, an ARM Mali-G71 graphics chip and two display sizes with “edge” designs. And the Home button and the fingerprint sensor is reportedly going to be embedded under the display.

According to The Investor, a Samsung executive revealed that the Galaxy S8 would have an edge-to-edge or bezel-less OLED display. “Samsung Display would roll out a full-screen display whose display area ratio (a scale that measures space taken up by a display on the front part of a handset) reaches more than 90 percent next year,” said Park Won-sang, a Samsung Display principal engineer, at the iMiD 2016 conference in Seoul. During the conference, Won-sang also presented a concept photo of a Galaxy S7 edge with a home button removed from the lower part of the device.

Most of the other smartphones available on the market today have an 80% display area ratio. And Won-sang said that Samsung is enhancing its technology so that it could provide a 99% screen-to-body ratio within the next few years. This means nearly the whole face of the Galaxy S8 would be a bezel-free display.

One of the benefits of increasing the display area ratio is that the Galaxy S8 would be able to facilitate an immersive virtual reality experience. This means the Galaxy S8 would work very well with virtual reality headsets like the Samsung Gear VR and the Google Daydream VR.

Samsung would not be the first company to release a device with an edge-to-edge display. The Xiaomi Mi MIX has a 6.4-inch IPS LCD edgeless display with a screen-to-body ratio of 91.3%. The ceramic black version of the Xiaomi Mi MIX with 4GB RAM, 128GB storage and dual SIM is available for preorder at a price of $669. The front-facing camera is located at the bottom bezel of the Xiaomi Mi MIX since there isn’t a top bezel. Next year, Apple is reportedly going to make the “iPhone 8” with an edge-to-edge display too.

The Investor also reported that it has a Samsung Display researcher source who leaked details about the company working on a “bendable VR device with a flexible OLED display that can be bent to cover a user’s eyes completely.” The Galaxy S8 is reportedly going to be released on February 26, 2017 to coincide with Mobile World Congress.
